Xaviars at Piermont NY – 2

The fourth dining event in my 67th birthday celebration was a dinner with Linda, Andrea and Tony at Xaviars. We had also observed my 66th together at Xaviars and, as my blogpost then related, I was amazed at what an excellent meal we had.

When we arrived at 8:00 on this Thursday evening, the restaurant was close to being full. The other diners were more casual and noisier than the last time, but by 9:30 the dining room was almost empty.

 We had told Xaviars in advance that we wanted to bring our own red wine. They promptly took my bottle of 1996 Volnay and decanted it into a carafe. Andrea had brought older wines which she asked not to be opened until we were ready for them. We ordered a bottle of 2003 Vieux Clocher Vacqueyras (60% grenache blanc, 30% clairette and 10% Bourboulenc) for apéritif and to start the fish and seafood courses. It had a nice fresh flinty flavor and was a bargain. It was followed by a bottle of 2004 Brewer-Clifton (Santa Rita Hills) “Clos Pepe” Chardonnay which was more expensive and disappointing; at 15.4% alcohol the chardonnay character did not come through.

 ma.jpgThe amuse-gueule was a seared sea scallop on a potato croquette with uni foam. Served in a small portion on a big white plate it was difficult to photograph, but was light and good.

The first course was spaghetti alla chitarra with lump crabmeat, scallions and breadcrumbs served with a very thin fresh grissino.

Next was a prawn with a mild slice of jalapeño, grilled polenta and tangerine coulis.

The portions had been very small, but now a more substantial course was served: a slice of daurade on tomato concassé and brown rice, served with pumpkin seed oil and crispy scallion shards.

Then came slices of sashimi-quality ahi tuna interleaved with slices of watermelon with a sesame soy sauce. They were served with “micro greens” which we guessed were beet sprouts, an Indian flat bread and a glass of dry sake.

100_1420a.jpgWe moved on to a slice of Hudson Valley foie gras and caramelized onions served on brioche with 17-year-old-balsamic-vinegar and a small scoop of strawberry gelato on top with mâche on the side.

We started drinking the very nice 1996 “Clos de la Barre” Louis Jadot Volnay.

Then came Peking-style squab and a rolled crêpe filled with duck confit. They were served with a coulis of roasted peppers and bok choy.

Andrea’s bottle of 1979 La Tâche was opened and served. It was terrific.

The next course was chunks of osso buco veal in a vermouth-vanilla stock with a rich smooth parsnip purée.

Andrea had her bottle of 1979 Guigal “La Landonne” Côte Rôtie opened and served. Unlike the La Tâche, which was ready when opened, the Côte Rôtie seemed closed at first. Here she discusses the wines and the meal with Xaviars Chef Kathy Egan who came out of the kitchen to chat with us.

The last meat course was butter-poached filet of beef with foie gras sabayon, caramelized onions, green beans, truffled potato purée and a tomato flower.

mk.jpgWe were then given an intermezzo, a glass of chilled fruit soup with yuzu foam and small pieces of mango.

Andrea had asked for cheese instead of dessert and was served a plate with fruits, nuts and pieces of Shropshire, Epoisse, Coach Farm goat cheeese and Ossau Iraty.

The four-part dessert for the three of us was a Grand Marnier soufflée with crème Anglaise; a dark Belgian chocolate glob; an almond millefeuille with black currents and cream; a pannacotta with grapefruit. My plate had “Happy Birthday” written in chocolate and a candle in a strawberry.

The very reasonable bill was presented with rose petals.

The evening was different in some ways from our first time at Xaviars a year ago, but not less successful. That was a challenge to begin with as our expectations were so much higher this time. We certainly plan to return. We recommend that you go there too.

(Piermont, NY, is on the west bank of the Hudson River just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Andrea and Tony live across the bridge. Linda and I stayed at The Holiday Inn in Orangeburg, NY, a ten minute drive uphill from Xaviars; it was fine.)

    What fun. The pictures and layout are beautiful. Everyone looked like they had a great time…..I hope no one had too far to drive home.
