Chez Braccioforte, Imperia

October 5, 2007

Linda and I had lunch at Chez Braccioforte on September 26, 2007. It is under the arcades which line the waterfront of the port of Oneglia, one of the two old cities which now form Imperia, the capital of Liguria’s western province. Behind the port there was a lively Wednesday market. A little further back there is a lovely old arcaded shopping street.

In the top picture you can see Porto Maurizio, on the hill on the far side of the Impero River. For centuries it was a protectorate of Genoa while Oneglia was allied with Savoy.

We received a warm welcome chez Braccioforte and ordered a bottle of Laura Aschero Vermentino, the Ligurian white wine which goes very well with seafood.

We both started with a house specialty, squares of pasta tossed in a fish broth with small pieces of fish and vegetables.

Linda’s main course was a fritto misto, quickly deep-fried local shellfish.

My main course was a fish filet in cartoccio, that is cooked wrapped in foil with potato chunks and shellfish pieces so that the shellfish flavor permeated everything.

Dessert was a frozen zabiglione, that is egg yolks whipped with Marsala wine and chilled in a mold.

We enjoyed the meal. It was traditional cooking of the region with fresh seafood.

There are two other serious restaurants nearby under the arcades, we hope to come back and try them some time.
