Girasole, NYC

On November 12, 2008, Stu and Sonia invited us to Girasole, a classic Upper East Side Italian restaurant. We were seated at the corner table in front. A plate of antipasto and a basket of breads arrived.

Stu ordered the first of two bottles of 2004 TorCalvano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This southern Tuscan red wine was a good match for the cuisine.

 

Sonia’s first course was the
Insalata Trecolore

 

Linda started with the
Linguine con Vongole E Cozze

with clams and mussels

My first course was the
Spiedino di Mozzarella Affumicata

warm mozzarella, roasted peppers and prosciutto

This was very good. The mozzarella had been freshly smoked. The endive base, the peppers, ham and basil all worked together.

Stu went on to the
Pesce del Giorno
broiled salmon with green beans.


 

Linda and Sonia had the
Quaglie con Risotto
boneless quail with italian rice

My main course was
Rognoncini di Vitello con Salsiccia
veal kidney with sausage and polenta

The kidney pieces were a bit overcooked and not tender, but the sausage flavor made for a tasty dish.

We skipped dessert despite the beautiful presentation plate.
 

Glasses of lemoncello or prosecco were offered on the house along with biscotti.
 
The meal was in the tradition of the restaurant: solid NY Italian fare as they have been serving it for the last twenty years.
