Magnolia’s, Charleston SC

March 20, 2009

On Sunday, March 15, 2009, Kaitlyn, Karyn, Linda, Blair and I had brunch at Magnolia’s, a popular, down-south, restaurant on East Bay Street, the heart of the bar and restaurant district of Charleston.

We ordered a bottle of Mumm Napa and a plate to share of
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
with white cheddar and caramelized onion grits,
country ham, and tomato chutney
mga
The good country ham is what made this dish.

Then Blair had the
BANANAS FOSTER FRENCH TOAST
with smoked bacon and rum syrup

He thought this was really good and just right for the occasion.

Kaitlyn and Linda had the
ROASTED CHICKEN AND SAGE HASH
with poached eggs, sauteed spinach and hollandaise

The eggs, hollandaise sauce and spinach were good. There was a lot of hash with the potatoes nicely done, but the chicken pieces were sparse.

I had the
SHELLFISH OVER GRITS
sautéed shrimp, sea scallops and lobster over creamy white grits
with a lobster butter sauce and
fried spinach

This was quite rich. The seafood and sauce was good. The grits in the base were large and creamy.

Karyn had the
CRAB CAKES AND POACHED EGGS
with country ham, sweet corn salsa, seasoned potato hash and chive hollandaise

She enjoyed it.

The brunch was just right for the occasion. The service and ambience were fine and the prices reasonable. For down-south cooking that doesn’t try to be anything else, we can recommend Magnolia’s.
