La Maison de Bacon, Antibes

May 14, 2024

Linda and I joined Daniel and Nicole at La Maison de Bacon for lunch on April 17, 2024. We had not been there for twelve years. In 2021 it was taken over from the family which had founded it in 1948 by new proprietors and substantially renovated. But the emphasis on fish remains, as does the stunning view.

We were seated looking out from the Cap d’Antibes toward the old ramparts of Antibes and the mountains behind.

We started with glasses of Ruinart Champagne.

The fish selection was presented.

At lunch a menu, L’Esprit du Midi is offered; this is a pun on the French words for midday and for the south of France. We made our choices from the two offered in each course.

Bread was served.

We ordered a bottle of 2020 Sainte-Ombeline.

This chardonnay is from the monks at the monastery on the îles de Lérins offshore nearby.

The appetizer was a seasonal pea panna cotta.

Nice.

Our first course was
TARTARE DE LOUP SAUVAGE
MAYONNAISE D’ESTRAGON ET GEL DE CITRON DE PAYS, SORBET FENOUIL
Avec caviar osciètre de la Maison Kaviari

Wild seabass tartar was on a tarragon mayonnaise. It was topped with dabs of lemon gel, fennel sorbet and Oscietra caviar. An excellent combination of top ingredients.

CABILLAUD SKREI EN CUISSON DOUCE
A L’AIL DES OURS ET BASILIC, HOLLANDAISE CITRONNEE

A chunk of Norwegian cod was slow cooked with wild garlic and basil. It was dressed with lemon hollandaise sauce and garnished with peas, potatoes and mushrooms.

Dessert for Linda and me was
PALET CROUSTILLANT LEGER A LA MANGUE
TOUCHE EXOTIQUE ET SORBET AU CURRY

A shortbread round was topped with a mango custard and curry sorbet.

Daniel and Nicole had sorbets.

The mignardises were macarons and a raspberry topped financières.

We had a lovely time. The tartare was excellent. The service and pace were good and the ambiance superb. I wish that La Maison de Bacon were not so far away in today’s oppressive traffic.

Surprised you would order Norwegian skrei cod with all that lovely local fish on display, but it looks like a lovely restaurant!

We were ordering from the set luncheon menu and the other choice was meat. Cod has a long tradition on the Côte d’Azur.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. Yes, cod is good and skrei is up there with the best. My Norwegian friend cooked some for me when I was ion Oslo last. I continue to enjoy your meals vicariously.
